The Selkirk Steelers announce that 20-year-old defenceman Dylan Heide has accepted a scholarship to the University of Toronto of the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) beginning this upcoming 2012-2013 season.
Heide, who originates from Winnipeg, MB, spent his entire junior hockey career (4 seasons) with the Selkirk Steelers appearing in 237 regular season games, scoring 39 goals, 127 assists for 166 points.
This past 2011-2012 season, Heide scored a junior hockey career high 20 goals combined with 41 assists for a total of 61 points. Heide also finished 1st in scoring amongst Steelers defencemen, 20th overall in league scoring and 2nd overall amongst MJHL defencemen.
Heide was also the Manitoba Junior Hockey Leagues' recipient of the inaugural IBAM (Insurance Brokers Association of Manitoba) scholarship. The IBAM award provides $2,000 towards post-secondary education.
"I'm excited about the opportunity to move onto the next level and play CIS hockey. The opportunity to combine elite hockey with a prestigious educational program is exciting. It's a rare opportunity that a player gets to play his whole junior career with the same team. I can't say enough about the continuing support I got from my family, teammates, coaches and the Selkirk Steelers Hockey Club along the way." says Heide.
"On behalf of the Selkirk Stelers Hockey Club, I would like to congratulate Dylan Heide on accepting a scholarship to play at the University of Toronto this coming fall. We are extremely proud of Dylan for this accomplishment as it is well deserved. The U of T is an amazing school that is highly regarded in the academic world. Heider will join Steelers teammate Lane Werbowski on the Varsity Blues blueline. Dylan will excel at the CIS level due to his play in all zones. He is capable of shutting down another team's top line as well as scoring a goal on the power play. It was a real pleasure to have coached Dylan these past 3 years and I am looking forward to seeing how he progresses in his university career. I wish him the best of luck." says Ryan Smith, Head Coach and Director of Player Personnel.
Heide will be joining fellow Steelers' graduating defenceman Lane Werbowski who also accepted a scholarship to the University of Toronto this off-season.
