Selkirk Steelers captain, Owen Branson, was recognized on Tuesday night as the Steelers RBC Community Ambassador.

Branson has displayed outstanding citizenship and sportsmanship both on and off the ice and a commitment to volunteerism. RBC Community Ambassadors are recognized for making a difference by giving back to their time to the communities where they play.

“It’s an honour to be named the Steelers ambassador,” Branson shared. “Having the opportunity to play hockey in this community is such an honour and giving back is a huge part of it. We are seen as role models and for younger kids to see we aren’t just hockey players but people who don’t just think about ourselves is very important.”

Like Branson, each Ambassador is recognized at their RBC Game Night and will be honoured by a donation from RBC to a school in their local community. Branson has selected Ruth Hooker School in Selkirk and shared his favourite thing about giving back.

“The best part about being in the community is meeting new people and getting to know them not just through hockey but on a personal level, it’s very refreshing and rewarding,” Branson concluded.

At the conclusion of the regular season, one RBC – MJHL Community Ambassador will be named as the recipient of the RBC Community Award, which comes with a further donation from RBC in the player’s name to a school in their local community.
