This week, the spotlight shines on MJHL Alumni playing D1 hockey as we take a look at our first three players at the collegiate level: Ryan Botterill, Dominik Wasik, and Carson Reed.
Ryan Botterill | University of Wisconsin
MJHL | Portage Terriers (2020-23)
22-Years-Old | Forward
Botterill was a goal scoring machine for the Terriers with 55 goals in 74 career MJHL regular season games. During the 2022-23 season, the Portage la Prairie native was named an MJHL 1st Team All-Star, led the league in goals and was named the recipient of the Frank McKinnon Memorial Trophy.
Following his success in the MJHL, Botterill advanced to the USHL with the Youngstown Phantoms for one season where he continued to put the puck in the net, notching 29 goals in 57 games to go along with 26 assists. His play earned him the USHL’s Gentleman of the Year Award. Currently, Botterill is wrapping up his sophomore season at Wisconsin where he has scored 8 goals and 7 assists in 29 games for the Badgers.
Dominik Wasik | Air Force Academy
MJHL | Steinbach Pistons (2022-23)
23-Years-Old | Goaltender
In the MJHL for one season, Dominik Wasik helped solidify the Pistons crease and was a key contributor in Steinbach’s run to a Turnbull Cup Championship. The puck stopper out of Superior, Wisconsin, played all 18 playoff games for the Pistons, posting a 2.35 goals against average to go along with a 0.921 save percentage and 4 shutouts.
After his championship run in the MJHL, Wasik joined Air Force Academy where he has starred in net this season, going 14-9-2 with a 2.52 goals against average and 0.905 save percentage. Wasik has earned both AHA Goalie of the Week and Goalie of the Month honours this season.
Carson Reed | University of Alaska-Anchorage
MJHL | Niverville Nighthawks (2022-23)
21-Years-Old | Defenceman
Reed made an immediate impact on the blueline for the expansion Nighthawks in his rookie season playing in the MJHL. Contributing 5 goals and 21 assists in 50 regular season games, the American defender earned a nod on the MJHL’s all-rookie team before making the jump to play in the USHL with the Waterloo Blackhawks.
After a season in the USHL with Waterloo, Reed has spent the last two seasons patrolling the blueline in Alaska for the Nanooks where he has suited up in 57 collegiate games. This season, Reed has scored twice, adding five assists in the process.
