WINNIPEG, MB – The Virden Oil Capitals took a 2-0 series lead over the Neepawa Titans while the Niverville Nighthawks offense exploded at home to give them a 1-0 series lead over the Winkler Flyers on night two of the McMunn & Yates Turnbull Cup Playoffs.

The Virden Oil Capitals cruised to a 4-1 win over the Neepawa Titans on Saturday night thanks to four, first period goals. Tyson Draper scored twice for the Oil Caps while Braxton Burdeny stopped 26 of 27 shots to help put Virden in the drivers seat heading back to home ice for game three.

On special teams the Oil Capitals would go 0 for 5 on the man advantage while the Titans lone powerplay opportunity didn’t see success. Ryan Harris scored in the 3rd period for the Titans while Zach Burleigh made 31 saves in the loss.
Through two games the Oil Capitals have allowed just one goal against thanks to great defensive play and strong goaltending from Braxton Burdeny.
Game three is set for Tuesday night at Tundra Oil & Gas Place in Virden at 7:30.
Nighthawks 8 Flyers 2 | Nighthawks lead best-of-seven series 1-0
After a fast and furious first period that saw the Nighthawks and Flyers exchange goals to head into the 2nd period tied at 2-2, the Nighthawks would take over. John Scott recorded a hat-trick for the Nighthawks while both Evan Panzer and Adam Vigfusson each added a pair of goals.
Niverville would end up scoring six unanswered goals on their way to a strong win on home ice in front of 800 plus rabid fans at the Niverville CRRC.

Winkler found themselves in some penalty trouble and the Nighthawks capitalized on 2 of 7 opportunities while the Flyers went 1 for 2 on the man advantage. Austin Dubinsky was solid in the win, turning aside 25 of 27 for the Nighthawks including some big saves at key moments.
These two MGEU East Division rivals get back at it for game two on Monday night at the Centennial Arena in Winkler at 7:00.
