Nighthawks grab 2-0 series lead on road in Virden

WINNIPEG, MB – Merik Boles returned to the lineup and recorded the game winner while Austin Dubinsky made 28 saves to help lift the Niverville Nighthawks to a 3-1 victory over the Virden Oil Capitals in game two of the McMunn & Yates Turnbull Cup Final on Sunday night.

Calyb Moore gave the Nighthawks a 1-0 lead with his third of the postseason when he beat Braxton Burdeny on the doorstep early in the 1st. Despite outshooting the Nighthawks 14-8 in the opening twenty minutes, Virden would trail by one heading to the 2nd.

Niverville would double their lead just 1:55 into the period when Merik Boles would take a nice feed from Hayden Wheddon and beat Burdeny on the short side with his 3rd of the postseason.

With under five to play in the period, Aaron Krestanowich sprung Dawson Zeller on a breakaway where he would make no mistake, netting his 6th of the playoffs to extend the Nighthawks lead to three.

Liam Goertzen would score a late goal in the 3rd period with Burdeny on the bench for the extra attacker but that’s as close as they would come with the Nighthawks winning 3-1 in game two to take a 2-0 series lead in the best-of-seven McMunn & Yates Turnbull Cup Final.

Game three is set for Tuesday night in Niverville when the Oil Capitals travel east to take on the Nighthawks with puck drop set for 7:30 at the CRRC.
