Oil Capitals, Wolverines, and Terriers strike first

WINNIPEG, MB – The Virden Oil Capitals, Waywayseecappo Wolverines, and Portage Terriers each took a 1-0 series lead on opening night of the McMunn & Yates Turnbull Cup Playoffs.

Braxton Burdeny posted a 23-save shutout while Dysen Drake scored a hat-trick to help propel the Oil Capitals to a series opening win over the Titans on Friday night in front of 1000 fans at Tundra Oil & Gas Place in Virden.

Oil Capitals Captain, Ty Plaisier, recorded 3 assists while Titans goaltender, KC Couckuyt stopped 37 of 43 shots sent his way. It will be a quick turnaround for these two clubs as they get right back to it on Saturday night in Neepawa at 7:30.

Wolverines 4 Kings 3 F/OT | Wolverines lead best-of-seven series 1-0
Cole Hunter scored 6:05 into the first overtime period while Jase Wareham made 37 of 40 saves to give the Wolverines an opening series win on the road in Dauphin.

After Ty Pratte tied the game in the 2nd period for the Kings on a powerplay marker, Ethan Stewart scored in the first minute of the 3rd to give the Kings their first lead of the night. Sebastien Hicks would tie the game with a powerplay goal of his own for the Wolverines midway through the 3rd and the two teams would require overtime after remaining scoreless.

Cole Hunter would split the defense in overtime and beat Hunter Bauer for the Wolverines win. The Wolverines and Kings will have a day off before hitting the ice in Waywayseecappo on Sunday night at 7:30.

Terriers 3 Pistons 2 | Terriers lead best-of-seven series 1-0
Beck Bethard broke the 2-2 deadlock with under five minutes to play in the 3rd period while Logan Cunningham came up big in stopping 36 of 38 to give the Terriers a series lead over the Pistons.

Following a scoreless first period the Terriers would strike twice in the opening ten minutes of the 2nd with goals coming from Drayden Uhrina and Rhett Platt. After Jackson Kostiuk cut the deficit to one for the Pistons, Zhenya Miles would find the back of the net from the point to tie the game early in the 3rd on the powerplay.

With just under five minutes to play, Beck Bethard created a turnover and beat his defender before shooting the puck over the glove of Chris Quizzi that would stand as the game winner. A day off is ahead for these two clubs on Saturday before they meet in game two on Sunday night in Portage at 6:30.
