WHL Prospects feature: Uhrina, Pickering & Deschamps

In the coming weeks, mjhlhockey.ca will feature several Western Hockey League (WHL) prospects who are succeeding in the MJHL, along with a number of MJHL alumni who are thriving in the WHL, NCAA and USPORTS levels.

This week, the spotlight continues to shine on the WHL takes the spotlight as we take a look at the next three prospects: Drayden Uhrina, Graeme Pickering, and Jett Deschamps.

Drayden Uhrina | Portage Terriers
16-Years-Old | Forward

WHL Draft: 2024, 3rd Round #53 Overall | Victoria Royals

Uhrina has broke onto the scene in the MJHL this season with the Terriers and sits 11th in league scoring and 3rd amongst all rookies as a 16-year-old. The Winnipegger joined the Terriers from the RHA U18 prep program and has fit in seamlessly on a line with fellow rookie star, Trevor Hill, and veteran Rhett Platt. His playmaking ability, vision on the ice and his hard nosed style make him a force for the Terriers.

Graeme Pickering | Winkler Flyers
16-Years-Old | Defenceman
2025-26: 18GP | 1G | 7A | 8PTS
WHL Draft: 2024, 1st Round #24th Overall | Red Deer Rebels

Jumping into the MJHL as a 16-year-old defenceman is no easy task and Graeme Pickering has done a tremendous job of adapting to playing against stronger and faster competition. Pickering earned 1 game of WHL action this season with the Rebels before his reassignment to Winkler where he has continued to grow and develop. Jett Deschamps | Virden Oil Capitals
17-Years-Old | Defenceman
2025-26: 30GP | 7A | 7PTS
WHL Draft: 2023, 5th Round #96 Overall | Regina Pats

Another young defender who has settled into junior hockey quickly is Jett Deschamps in Virden. Described as a skilled defensemen who thinks the game well and has a good stick, Deschamps’ skill has allowed him to be a regular in the Oil Capitals lineup while earning minutes on special teams.
