MJHL splits Western All-Star Challenge

MARTENSVILLE, SK – Team MJHL wrapped up the Western All-Star Challenge with a 5-4 win over the SJHL to close out the event with a split.

For a second straight year at the event, Team MJHL featured a much younger roster than their counterparts and showed up in a big way to represent the MJHL with a pair of strong performances.

On Wednesday, the SJHL opened the scoring early in the first before Cole Hunter scored on a feed from Rory Gilmour and Bryce Bryant. On an early man-advantage in the second, the SJHL would scored shorthanded to go up 2-1.

In the back half of the period, Colten Worthington slid a pass between the legs of the defender and found the Northern Michigan D1 commit, Cole Hunter, for his second of the game. With just over a minute left in the period, the SJHL would score to take a 3-2 lead into the final twenty minutes of play.

Saskatchewan would scored early in the third and go up by two before the MJHL took over. Bryce Bryant, Lincoln Black-Greaves and Rory Gilmour each scored within six minutes to give the MJHL a 5-4 lead. The SJHL would pull their goalie but that would be all as Team MJHL would earn a win and take the split.

Ethan Sawyer stopped 15/17 shots in his half while Justin Perreault turned aside 14/16.

Earlier in the week on Tuesday, Team MJHL found themselves down 3-0 in the third period despite heavily outshooting the SJHL.

The comeback push started and Loik Leduc put home a nice pass from Evan Gradt to get the MJHL on the board. With under two minutes to play in the game, Ethan Stewart picked up a rebound at the side of the net and buried it to bring the MJHL within a goal.

Ethan Sawyer would come to the bench for the extra attacker but that’s as close as they would get with the comeback effort falling short, dropping a 3-2 decision to the SJHL.

Justin Perreault stopped 17/19 shots while Ethan Sawyer turned aside 8/9.
