Monarchs, Stampeders, Pistons, Kings, and Steelers win on Friday

MONARCHS DOUBLE UP WOLVERINES
Winnipeg Monarchs 6, Waywayseecappo Wolverines 3

Waywayseecappo, MB – 16-year-old Brayden Gregg scored twice while goaltender Piet Mierau made 32 saves to help the Winnipeg Monarchs earn a 6-3 win over the Waywayseecappo Wolverines on Friday night.

After Adam Chipelski and Nicholas Campbell traded goals to send the game into the 2nd period tied at 1-1, the Monarchs scored four goals in just over a five minute span in the second period. Nicholas Campbell, Brayden Gregg (x2), and Carter Kingerski would give the Monarchs a 5-1 lead.


Carter Haney would pull the Wolverines back within three with his fifth of the season less than a minute later, only to have Taevon Welle score shorthanded for his first of the season to restore the Monarchs four-goal lead. Liam Flett added a late marker for the Wolverines but that’s as close as they would come with the Monarchs picking up their second win of the season.

Waywayeecappo outshot Winnipeg, 35-18 in the loss. The two clubs get right back to it on Saturday night in Waywayseecappo with puck drop set for 7:30.

LAVE’S OT WINNER LIFTS PISTONS OVER NIGHTHAWKS
Steinbach Pistons 4, Niverville Nighthawks 3 F/OT

Niverville, MB – Caden Lave scored 1:34 into overtime to lift the Steinbach Pistons over the Niverville Nighthawks on Friday night in a hard fought MGEU East Division battle.

Marlen Edwards opened the scoring in period one to give the Nighthawks an early lead only to see Lyndon Lamb tie the game on a powerplay maker.

Late in the second, 16-year-old, Owen Murray scored his first of the season to give Niverville a 2-1 lead before Lyndon Lamb’s second of the night tied the game with eight seconds left in the period. This time, Steinbach would take their first lead of the night in the third period when Logan Mehl would find the back of the net just 3:40 in.

With under two minutes to play down by one, Marlen Edwards cut into the slot and fired in a quick shot for his second of the game and sixth of the season to tie the game and send it to extra time.


Early in overtime, Caden Lave walked around his defender and cut across the crease before tucking in the game winner around Ben Chornomydz, giving Steinbach the 4-3 win to improve their record to a league best, 6-1-0-0.

KINGS WIN FIFTH STRAIGHT IN SHOOUT WIN OVER TITANS
Dauphin Kings 5, Neepawa Titans 4 F/SO

Neepawa, MB – The Dauphin Kings battled back from four separate deficits before defeating the Neepawa Titans 5-4 in a shootout on Friday night to earn their fourth straight win.

Neepawa took a 1-0 lead on Grayson Slaney’s goal at 18:15. Quinten Fisk answered early in the second, scoring his sixth of the season unassisted at 1:27. Jacob Reimer restored Neepawa’s advantage midway through the frame, giving the Titans a 2-1 lead after 40 minutes.

Dauphin came out pushing in the third, firing 19 shots on goal and found answers. Brody Green tied things at 2:48 with his fifth of the season.

After Cameron Solem put Neepawa ahead again, Sam Swanton responded just 19 seconds later, scoring his first of the season. Addison McIntosh made it 4-3 Titans at 13:52 before Bennett Muller scored his third of the season at 19:23 to force overtime. Following a scoreless extra period, Fisk recorded the shootout’s only goal while Bryson Yaschyshyn sealed the door shut.

Dauphin outshot Neepawa 40-38 in the win and helped themselves keep pace in what has been a tight MGEU West Division.

FALLS BACKSTOPS STAMPEDERS TO HOME ICE WIN
Swan Valley Stampeders 5, Portage Terriers 2

Swan River, MB – Easton Falls made 39 saves while Dylan Ruff scored twice to help the Swan Valley Stampeders earn a key win on home ice against the Portage Terriers.

The Stampeders got out to a comfortable 4-0 lead in the second period thanks to a pair of goals from Dylan Ruff, and singles from Beckett Cross and Alex Campbell.

Rhett Perrin would get the Terriers on the board in the second, only to have Trace Langan score his 8th of the season in the third to restore the Stampeders four-goal lead. 45 seconds later, Matthew Campanella’s third of the year cut the Terriers deficit to three, but that’s as close as they would get with the Stampeders closing out the 5-2 win at home.


Dylan Ruff, and Trace Langan, continue to cause problems for their opponents as the duo sits second and third in points.

SOUSA’S HAT-TRICK LEADS STEELERS OVER BLIZZARD
Selkirk Steelers 4, Northern Manitoba Blizzard 2

Selkirk, MB – Issac Sousa’s hat-trick performance helped the Selkirk Steelers earn an important win on home ice over the Northern Manitoba Blizzard on Friday night.

After a scoreless period that saw Selkirk outshoot Northern Manitoba, 14-6, the goals came fast and furious in the second. Issac Sousa gave the Steelers a 1-0 lead at 1:42 of the second, only to have Matthew O’Sullivan tie the game six minutes later with his 8th of the year on the powerplay.

On a Steelers man-advantage just three minutes later, Sousa would notch his second of the game on the powerplay to restore their lead. Selkirk would capitalize on another powerplay opportunity, this time with Teagan Wrolstad putting home his sixth of the season.

Late in the third, O’Sullivan would score his league-leading ninth of the season to pull the Blizzard back within one, only to have Sousa complete the hat-trick, helping Selkirk close out the game with a 4-2 win.
