Stampeders, Pistons and Blues remain undefeated

Northern Manitoba Blizzard 2, Portage Terriers 7

The Portage Terriers used a seven-goal offensive attack to earn a 7-2 victory over the Northern Manitoba Blizzard Friday night at Stride Place.

Portage opened the scoring 2:33 into the game while shorthanded, as Dominic Kostecki converted a feed from Dylan Karran. Northern Manitoba answered late in the opening frame when Brady Green scored at 16:22.


The Terriers responded with a trio of goals in the second period from Rhett Perrin, Hunter Dingman, and Tyler Wamboldt. Portage continued its offensive push in the third, with Ben Bugeaud, Branden Stieduhar and Dylan Karran finding the scoresheet. Bugeaud finished with three points, while Karran recorded a goal and an assist. Dane Gillis made 31 saves for the win.

Winkler Flyers 5, Winnipeg Monarchs 3

The Winkler Flyers scored three times in the second period and held off the Winnipeg Monarchs for a 5-3 road victory Friday night at the Hockey For All Centre.

William Lyons opened the scoring for Winkler at 2:16 of the first period on the power play, with Owen Wallace and Steven Foster picking up assists. Winnipeg answered at 9:27 when Colton White scored from Chase Gregg and Idris Alameddine, sending the game to the second period tied 1-1.

Winkler regained control in the second, scoring three times. Foster scored his third of the season at 2:50 before Charles-M Bernier added his first of the night at 7:56. Carter Sullivan extended the Flyers lead to 4-1 before Winnipeg answered shorthanded at 19:50 when Brayden Gregg scored to cut the deficit to 4-2.


Bernier netted his second of the night on the empty netter to give the Flyers a 5-2 lead before Ethan Hulme scored a powerplay goal with 36 seconds for the Monarchs to cut the lead to 5-3.

That would be all from Winnipeg as the Flyers would pick up the win with Ryler Gates stopping 22 shots for Winkler, while Piet Mierau finished with 41 saves for Winnipeg.

Niverville Nighthawks 2, Virden Oil Capitals 3

The Virden Oil Capitals held strong in the third period to defeat the Niverville Nighthawks 3-2 Friday night at Tundra Oil & Gas Place.

Niverville opened the scoring on the power play at 6:13 of the first period. Ryker Rougeau found the back of the net with Marlen Edwards and Jaden Mah earning assists.

Virden answered to open the 2nd period, scoring twice in a span of just two minutes. Tyson Draper got the Oil Capitals on the board at 3:13 of the second on the power play, before Christian Pitz gave Virden the lead at 4:53.

Aiden McDonald tied the game just three minuts later for the Nighthawks before Virden found an answer once again, with Carson Wright notching his first of the season which turned out to be the game winner.

Micky Gross made 19 saves to earn the win for Virden, while Ben Chornomydz stopped 34 shots for Niverville.

Winnipeg Blues 2, Selkirk Steelers 1 — OT

The Winnipeg Blues picked up a dramatic 2-1 overtime victory over the Selkirk Steelers on Friday night.

After a scoreless opening period, Selkirk broke through on the power play at 15:21 of the second. Cole Babych scored with Teagan Wrolstad and Kaiden Day assisting, giving the Steelers a 1-0 lead heading into the third.

The Blues battled back late in regulation when Aidan Fisher tied the game with just 3 seconds remaining in the third period. Just two minutes into the extra frame, Tristen Bailey scored the winner to give the Blues a second straight win to open the season.


George Jantz made 42 saves for the Blues, while Stefan Kostin stopped 28 shots for Selkirk.

Neepawa Titans 0, Steinbach Pistons 5

The Steinbach Pistons continued their strong start to the season with a convincing 5-0 shutout victory over the Neepawa Titans Friday night at the Southeast Event Centre.

Steinbach jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening period. Caden Lave opened the scoring at 5:58, with Rohan Guevarra and William Picklyk assisting. Marek Miller doubled the advantage at 9:13, giving the Pistons a two-goal cushion after 20 minutes.


Luke Assi extended the lead to three at 14:08 of the second period. Steinbach added two more goals in the third, with Jameson Duell scoring at 7:50 from Cullen Ingebritson and Lyndon Lamb, before Rory Gilmour rounded out the scoring at 15:33 with assists from Miller and Assi. Lincoln Molind turned aside all 19 shots he faced to record the shutout, while Wyatt Nelson made 20 saves for Neepawa.

Swan Valley Stampeders 6, Dauphin Kings 2

The Swan Valley Stampeders scored six straight goals and never looked back, earning a 6-2 victory over the Dauphin Kings Friday night at Credit Union Place.

After Collin Fiedrich scored his fourth of the season to open the scoring for the Kings, Swan Valley scored twice on the power play in the opening 8:33 with Trace Langan and Jake Giacobbo combining for goals just 36 seconds apart. Langan scored his second of the night at 18:19 from Ruff and Lutgen, giving the Stampeders a 3-1 lead after one.

Swan Valley continued to pour on the offence in the second. Nate Hayes scored just 57 seconds into the frame before Ben Groome added a power-play goal at 10:32, his third of the season.


Langan completed his hat trick at 10:33 of the third on another Swan Valley power play, with Giacobbo and Ruff assisting. Brody Green scored his first as a King late in the third, but that would be all as Joe Naccarato made 34 saves for the win, while Dauphin used Bryson Yashchyn and Tate Barnaby in goal.
