Steelers, Pistons, and Stampeders sweep weekend home-and-home series

Portage Terriers 5, Neepawa Titans 2

NEEPAWA, MB – The Portage Terriers picked up their first win of the 2026-27 MJHL season Saturday night, defeating the Neepawa Titans 5-2 at the Yellowhead Centre. Portage opened the scoring on the power play at 9:18 of the first period, with Justin Deschenes finding the back of the net. Tyler Wamboldt added another before the opening period was over to give the Terriers a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes.


The Titans answered twice in the third period, with Grayson Slaney scoring shorthanded at 4:40 before Kole Beard tied the game at 7:38. Portage responded with three goals of its own, however, as Justin Studiah restored the lead on the power play before Parker Seymour and Wyatt Warner added insurance. The Terriers also received a 25-save performance from Mitch Kathler, while Neepawa goaltender Conner Nicolson stopped 35 shots in the loss.

DRAPER HELPS VIRDEN STRIKE OIL

Virden Oil Capitals 5, Waywayseecappo Wolverines 4 — Shootout

VIRDEN, MB – The Virden Oil Capitals opened their home schedule with a dramatic 5-4 shootout victory over the Waywayseecappo Wolverines at Tundra Oil & Gas Place. Waywayseecappo struck first on a goal from Dylan Duzan at 7:59 of the opening period, but Virden responded with three unanswered goals across the first two periods. Tyson Ulmer, Dylan Mickelson and Tyson Getzlaff all found the scoresheet for the Oil Capitals.


The Wolverines battled back in the third, with Carter Haney completing his hat trick at 18:37 to force overtime. Neither team could find the winner in the extra frame, sending the game to a shootout. After the Wolverines were unable to convert on their attempts, Virden captain Tyson Draper scored the deciding goal to secure the two-point victory. Mickelson, Draper and Getzlaff were named Virden’s three stars.

PAULSEN HATTY LIFTS STEELERS

Selkirk Steelers 3, Dauphin Kings 2

DAUPHIN, MB – The Selkirk Steelers erased an early deficit and held on for a 3-2 victory over the Dauphin Kings at Credit Union Place. Dauphin opened the scoring at 12:55 of the first period when Max Friedrich finished a play set up by Quinten Fisk and Sam Swanton. Selkirk responded with two goals just over two minutes apart in the second, both from Noah Paulsen.


Paulsen completed his hat trick early in the third period, giving the Steelers their first lead of the night and ultimately the game-winning goal. Friedrich scored his second of the night at 12:41 of the third, but Selkirk’s defence held the Kings off the scoresheet the rest of the way. Hudson Hunnie made 30 saves for the Steelers, while Bryson Yaschshyn turned aside 28 shots for Dauphin.

MOLIND BACKSTOPS PISTONS TO BACK-TO-BACK WINS

Steinbach Pistons 5, Winkler Flyers 2

STEINBACH, MB – The Steinbach Pistons continued their strong start to the season with a 5-2 win over the Winkler Flyers at the Southeast Event Centre. Steinbach scored three times in the opening period, getting goals from Cullen Ingebritson, Rohan Guevarra and Cole Cairns, including a power-play marker from Cairns. The Pistons carried a 3-1 lead into the second period and added another from Marek Miller to extend their advantage.


Winkler’s Charles-Mathieu Bernier set up the Flyers’ second goal late in the third period, but Steinbach answered with an empty-net goal from Guevarra to put the game away. Ingebritson finished with a goal and an assist, while Miller and Guevarra each recorded two points. Lincoln Molind stopped 35 of 37 shots for the Pistons, while Jackson Dunn made 24 saves for Winkler.

BLUES OUTLAST MONARCHS IN BATTLE OF THE PEG

Winnipeg Blues 5, Winnipeg Monarchs 4 — OT

WINNIPEG, MB – The Winnipeg Blues rallied from a two-goal deficit to defeat the Winnipeg Monarchs 5-4 in overtime at the RINK Training Centre. The Monarchs exploded for three goals in the opening period, with Nicholas Campbell scoring twice and adding an assist as Winnipeg built a 3-1 advantage. Campbell completed his hat trick on the power play at 17:55 of the second period, putting the Monarchs ahead 4-2.


The Blues refused to go away. Tristen Bailey scored twice in the second period before completing his own hat trick with the game-tying goal at 12:11 of the third. Bailey then became the hero just 37 seconds into overtime, setting up the winner before Carter Voll finished the comeback. Bailey and Jaxin Karst each finished with three points, while Blues goaltender Tyler O’Keefe made 36 saves in the victory.

STAMPS TRAMPLE BLIZZARD ON HOME ICE

Swan Valley Stampeders 4, Northern Manitoba Blizzard 2

SWAN RIVER, MB – The Swan Valley Stampeders scored four unanswered goals to rally past the Northern Manitoba Blizzard 4-2 at Swan River Centennial Arena. Northern Manitoba opened the scoring on the power play late in the first period when Lorenz finished a setup from Matthew O’Sullivan and Liam Carlone. The Blizzard extended their lead to 2-0 late in the third period when Gavin Winterstein scored with the man advantage.


Swan Valley then took over, scoring four times in the final 10 minutes of regulation. Wylie Smith started the comeback on the power play before Dylan Ruff, Trace Langan and Langan again found the scoresheet. Langan’s second goal of the game came at 11:54 of the third and proved to be the eventual winner. Smith finished with a goal and two assists, while Langan recorded two goals and an assist. Easton Falls stopped 19 of 21 shots for the Stampeders.
