MJHL Announces Player of the Month Awards

RBC-MJHL Player of the Month Jeremey Leipsic of the Portage Terriers has been named the RBC-MJHL Player of the Month for October. The Winnipeg native recorded 28 points (9-19) in 14 games. The 19-year-old forward currently leads the MJHL scoring race. Aligning to RBC’s #Someday platform, Leipsic’s #Someday is “To help the Terriers make another championship run and earn a college scholarship." The runners up are 20 year old forward Jake Dudar of the Selkirk Steelers and 20 year old forward Scott Gall of the Winkler Flyers. Sher-Wood-MJHL Defenceman of the Month The Sher-wood-MJHL Defenceman of the Month is Brady Keeper of the OCN Blizzard. Keeper, 20, wasn’t only a stand-out on the blueline, but also contributed offensively with 17 points (8-9) in 13 games. Keeper, who hails from Cross Lake, has committed to University of Maine next season. The runners up are 19 year old Lawson McDonald of the Winkler Flyers and 18 year old Darby Gula of the Steinbach Pistons. MGEU-MJHL Goaltender of the Month Steinbach Pistons were ranked No. 1 in the CJHL several times in October, thanks in large part to the outstanding performance of their goaltender Roman Bengert. Bengert, 20, has been close to flawless, reflected in his league-leading 11-1 record. The native of Cole Harbour, N.S., also has one shutout, and save percentage of .935. The runners up are 19 year old Emilien Boily of the OCN Blizzard and 20 year old Marc Audet of the Virden Oil Capitals. IBAM-MJHL Rookie of the Month While he’s a rookie, Gino Lucia of the Winkler Flyers has shown the poise of a seasoned veteran. Lucia, 18, currently tops all rookie scorers with seven goals and 16 points in 14 games. A native of  St. Cloud, Minnesota, Lucia is looking forward to helping the Flyers remain near top spot in the MJHL. The runners up are 18 year old forward Will Koop of the Steinbach Pistons and 18 year old forward Dallas Tulik of the Winnipeg Blues. Manitoba Pork Peak Performer of the Month Winkler Flyers’ Will Blake was selected due to his outstanding community involvement. The 19-year-old forward has volunteered with four local groups since joining the Flyers. Once a week he goes to Maple Leaf School in Morden and helps in the classroom, reading or playing games. He also helps with the Winkler Can Skate program on Mondays and the Winkler Breakfast Club hockey program Wednesday mornings before children go to school. Will is also an assistant coach with the Morden Atom Bronze team and was lucky enough to attend the NHL Heritage Classic with that team as they were chosen by Hockey Manitoba.

Natives remain focused on playoff berth

By Derek Holtom MJHL Web Correspondent If the MJHL season was a month long, the Neepawa Natives would be a playoff team this season. But of course, the season is many months longer, and there is still a lot of hockey left to play, but the Neepawa Natives are off to one of their better starts in recent memory. New head coach Dustin Howden, though, isn’t satisfied with being in eighth place after the first five weeks of the season, and is looking to take his team to further heights. “We’ve had a decent start – to say it’s where we want to be, that wouldn’t be true – but we are giving ourselves a chance at two points every night,” said Howden, who moved into the head coaching position after starting as an assistant with the Natives back in 2014. “But it has been a grind here for the past couple of years, and this is all part of the process.” Maintaining a large portion of his young team from last year, the Natives are for the most part a year older and a year wiser. That’s helped them to pick up five wins in their first 12 games – including a three-game win streak. “It’s a good group of guys who have come back, and they’re all in better shape,” noted Howden. “It’s fun to come to the rink – when you’re competitive and the league is very close this year – what more could you ask for when you’re a player and a coach?” What’s led to the improvement for the Natives this year? Howden says it’s simply a matter of out-working their opponents. “It’s reinforcing (working hard) all the time,” he said. “We also want to value the puck more. So puck management, turnovers, and offensive zone time. “Hockey is ultimately a game of fundamentals, and if we continue to do that, it will help us keep the puck in the offensive zone as much as we can.” The Natives plan to spread the scoring around, but Howden did mention some players who are really contributing early on this season. “It’s been a good mix of everybody on the team,” said Howden. And he’s right – only one player on the roster has yet to pick up at least one point this year. “The young guys coming in have been great additions for us – guys like Sam Stewart and Brad Marshall,” he added. “And veterans we have asked to put up some points are – guys like Justin Metcalfe, Jordan Martin and Ashton Anderson. And Reigan Buchanan has really hit his stride the last few games. “But we’re a team that will score by committee.” As for November, the Natives have some tough opponents in front of them. And Howden says they are up for the challenge. “The goal for this year was to play .500 hockey and go from there, so we’re below that now, so we want to get up to that .500 level as quickly as possible,” he said. “November gives us Steinbach three times, the Blues two or three times, OCN, Virden and Portage. That’s a tough month, but a good month. And if we give ourselves some opportunities, we’re going to win some hockey games.”

MJHL alumni skating in the NHL

The MJHL has eight alumni members on NHL rosters, according to the Canadian Junior Hockey League. In total, there are 144 former CJHL players currently competing in the 30-team NHL, according to the CJHL. That number is based on those active NHL players that played at least one regular season game throughout any of the 10 leagues that comprise the CJHL. Representing the MJHL are: Matt Calvert (Winkler/Colorado), Joel Edmundson (Dauphin/St. Louis), Michael Ferland (Beausejour Blades/Calgary), Ryan Garbutt (Winnipeg South Blues/Anaheim), Travis Hamonic (Winnipeg Saints/New York Islanders), Cody McLeod (Wayway/Colorado), Jordin Tootoo (OCN/Chicago) and Travis Zajac (St. James Canadians/New Jersey). In breaking down the group of 144, there are 88 forwards, 44 defencemen and 12 goaltenders. Of note, every NHL team has at least one CJHL alumnus on their present roster. The St. Louis Blues boast the most ex-CJHLers as part of their line-up with nine. Next are the Columbus Blue Jackets, Edmonton Oilers, New York Islanders and Philadelphia Flyers with eight each while the Anaheim Ducks and Ottawa Senators are sporting seven CJHL alumni apiece. Impressively, all of the 10 leagues from across the country that form the CJHL have at least one of its former players on a NHL squad. "The ever-increasing number of our alumni on NHL clubs is a tremendous testament to the development of our players as well as to the preparation and commitment put forth by each of our 10 member leagues and their respective teams," stated CJHL Chairman Kirk Lamb. Pistons getting pink for cancer

The colour pink will be taking over the T.G. Smith Centre this Saturday. The Pistons are encouraging fans to suit up in pink and then get ready to cheer as Steinbach hosts the Dauphin Kings for the 2nd of back-to-back series. The Pistons will once again wear pink jerseys, which will then be auctioned off during the game. Once the buzzer sounds to end the game, the jerseys will be awarded to the highest bidder. Fans who may not be able to outbid the competition for a jersey can still get involved by giving a donation for a limited edition pink Pistons Pink in the Rink paper flag which will be handed out at the ticket gate during the game. The Pistons will be giving 4 year-old Izaiah Peters the opportunity to drop the puck. Izaiah recently finished 3 years of cancer treatments. The organization will also celebrate the cancer survivors in attendance recognizing them on the ice during the 1st intermission. The bidding process on the jerseys has begun at steinbachpistons.ca – place your bid by emailing info@steinbachpistons.ca. The proceeds from the event will be given to the Canadian Cancer Society Manitoba Division.

The players chosen are all exceptional kids both on-and-off the ice and all have bright futures in the game of hockey.   Follow along and share as we release a new MJHL-In the System Player Profile bi-weekly on the MJHL website and through MJHL social media platforms. Pistons’ Bengert rubs shoulders with NHLers

By Derek Holtom MJHL Web Correspondent While he’s not a household name in the world of hockey ─ at least not yet ─ Steinbach Pistons'  Roman Bengert has rubbed shoulders with hockey royalty: Sidney Crosby. Bengert hails from the Cole Harbour, N.S., which is the same hometown as the famous Crosby and another notable NHL star, Nathan McKinnon (Colorado).  “I’ve met Nanthan MacKinnon and Sidney Crosby a couple of times, and been able to be on the ice with them,” said Bengert. “They’re high-profile athletes and the one thing I can take away from them is their work ethic and focus. They’re tremendous in that area, both on and off the ice.” Over the last several years, Bengert’s Steinbach Pistons have been one of the strongest teams in the MJHL.  This season the Pistons are focused on claiming another MJHL championship, backed by the strong play of netminder Bengert. Bengert, 20,  has picked right up from where he left off last year, starting the season a perfect 8-0 with one shutout. Combined with his regular season record from last year of 25-8, Bengert has cemented his elite-netminder status in the MJHL. “I think he’s carried over from his play from last year,” said Pistons’ GM/Head Coach Paul Dyck. “He’s been everything we could have hope for so far. We saw him develop last year, and we think he’s taken his game to a new level.” The Pistons bench boss also has high praise for his No. 1 goalie and how he handles himself off the ice. “He is very focused, as you would expect from any of the elite players in this league,” he said. “He’s a great teammate, he wants to win, and is just an extremely pleasant guy.” Bengert agrees it’s been a solid start for him, though he’s quick to praise those around him for his own personal success. “It’s been a great start, and it all goes back to the play of my teammates for sure,” he said. Bengert has really enjoyed himself since joining the Pistons. He said he had bounced around a couple of other junior leagues before he found his home in Steinbach. He said it’s been the perfect fit both on and off the ice. “I came in to training camp last year and earned a spot on the team,” he noted. “And the community has been very supportive – the team, the community, the billets, everything.” The Pistons are excited about their potential this year after falling just short of the league title. And their early play is a true indication of that. “I think we look pretty good. We have a lot of veterans, and we’re hungry to beat teams like Portage and Winkler this season,” said Bengert. Likewise, Bengert’s focus is strictly on this season. He said he has no specific goals for after this season, but is keeping his options open while concentrating on his play with the Pistons. If he keeps up his current play, those post-junior opportunities will be seeking him out in no time.

MJHL alumni Henry on NHL radar screen

Former Portage Terrier Nick Henry was recently listed on the NHL’s Central Scouting Futures List. Henry, 17, last year’s MJHL Rookie of the Year winner, is currently playing with Regina Pats. Henry, who hails from Portage, is projected to be drafted in the middle rounds (4 to 6) in the NHL draft. Henry, 6-foot, 190-pounds, was highly touted by the Pat management, who convinced him to turn down an NCAA scholarship from Western Michigan University. Henry said his decision was based on exposure to NHL scouts.  “I kind of expected that there is going to be lots of scouts here watching,” Henry told The Regina Leader Post. “There are lots of guys here eligible for the draft and there are going to be at least three guys drafted this year, maybe four. It would be amazing to get drafted.” The lure of the NHL is one reason why Henry signed with the Pats, thus. He likes the idea of being able to jump straight into the WHL this season instead of biding his time elsewhere. “It’s not like the draft is the biggest thing for me,” Henry explained. “It’s (about) coming here and developing as a player. The college route is still a very, very good route. But it would have taken me a couple extra years to get to Western Michigan. It would have been maybe (another) year at Portage this year. The year after I would go down to the USHL, then go to Western. “Coming to Regina (now) is really good for me.” CJHL players listed by Central Scouting: Rank Player Name Pos. What are your hockey goals for the future?  I would like to have a solid season this year as a bantam.  I would then like to focus on making the AAA midget Wheat Kings. Assistant Coach Dave Lewis on Calder:  Calder Anderson is one of the hardest working and most competitive kids I have ever worked with.  Over the last 4 years he has continually worked at improving his skating and puck skills and combined with his exceptional hockey IQ, he has become an exceptional hockey player. He is a natural born leader who supports his teammates and leads by example.  He has been a treat to work with. He’s a great player but even a better person.  I fully expect Calder to play at the higher levels of hockey in the future.

Pistons’ No. 1 in CJHL ─ again

For the second week in a row, the MJHL’s Steinbach Pistons were ranked No. 1 in the Canadian Junior Hockey League. Pistons are currently firing on all cylinders, sporting an undefeated record of seven wins. The club also has an impressive 40 goals, giving up just 10. A trio of  Pistons sit in the Top Five points race: Jordan Bochinski (13 pts), Mackenzie Graham (12 pts) and Landon Plett (12 pts). Piston’s goaltender Roman Bengert (former Recycle Everywhere MJHL Player of the Week) has recorded six wins ─ the most of all goaltenders to date. One of his wins was a shut-out effort.

MJHL alumni Pedrick heading to Romania

By Derek Holtom MJHL Web Correspondent Former Swan Valley Stampeders and Waywayseecappo Wolverines coach Del Pedrick is about to take his skills overseas in a bold new adventure. Most recently the director of hockey development at Notre Dame in Wilcox, Sask., Pedrick and his wife Carolynn are relocating to Romania to take on an interesting challenge – build up the game of hockey in a region not known for their on-ice prowess. Pedrick was recently hired as a technical director at Seclerland Hockey in northern Romania, a short distance from the borders of the Ukraine, Moldova, and Hungary. The opportunity came about through one of the many contacts Pedrick has built throughout his coaching career, from his days in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League, to his stint in the North American Hockey League, to his experiences at Notre Dame and at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge. “I came out of a meeting one day, and I had a message from a contact I had made in Romania in 2009,” said Pedrick. “His name was Attila Nagy, and he said he was working on an exciting project, and he wanted me to look at it.” Pedrick was of course willing to take a look at the hockey-related project, but said Nagy quickly hinted that this project might be something he would be interested in actually heading up. “I said I would look at it first, and we’ll see how it goes from there,” he said. After some consideration, the Pedrick family headed overseas to see first-hand what was in store for hockey in this northern region of Romania. What Pedrick saw was an opportunity – to build up the game of hockey where is basically didn’t exist. “Back in 2009 there were only five indoor rinks for all of northern Romania,” he said. “Now we’re back seven years later and now they have more rinks in just their little region. So it’s exciting, they’re looking to build the game up at the ground level. “It’s a new challenge, and the timing worked out as well,” he added. “I had a chance to coach in the Czech Republic last year, but with a young family, and my kids not settled and in Grade 12, I didn’t pursue it. “So when their post-secondary plans were settled in June, and this opportunity came about in July – the timing worked out.” Notre Dame was an ideal place for Pedrick and his wife to live and work. Carolynn was also a teacher there, and their children had the chance to attend school at one of Canada’s most iconic schools – a place which has churned out hockey alumni including Tyler Myers, Rod Brind’Amour, Brad Richards, Wendel Clark and more. “I had a great experience working with some really motivated athletes,” said Pedrick, who won back-to-back midget AAA national championships in 2009-10. “And Wilcox was a great place to raise a family – a small village, great prairie living and the values that go with that.” And now Pedrick is ready for the next challenge. He’s had success in his previous jobs – though he downplays it – be it winning the first-ever playoff series for the Stampeders, to the national championships at Notre Dame. But this is something different. It’s something that’s truly grassroots, and building something from the ground up. “I’m very passionate about what I do, and I’m blessed about the opportunities I’ve been provided,” he said. “I may have jumped at things that make people scratch their heads – like a guy who leaves a job like teaching with four young kids and jumps in the car to become a hockey coach – but I’ve been fortunate enough to work in an exciting job, and a challenging industry." “And this is a chance for my wife and I to spend some time and do something different together.”

Brent Ladds named President of the CJHL

CALGARY, Alberta (September 27, 2016) – The Canadian Junior Hockey League (CJHL) announced Tuesday that Brent Ladds has been named the organization’s new president effective immediately.  As CJHL president, Ladds will lead all operations of the organization, including strategic planning, events, corporate partnerships and league administration.       "Brent brings a vast amount of passion, experience and understanding of Junior A hockey and he is extremely well-respected and trusted across the country at all levels of hockey," said CJHL Chairman of the Board Kirk Lamb.  "Brent's abilities and personal values are a tremendous addition to our organization and we are all looking forward to his leadership and to working closely with him to grow and strengthen the CJHL."   Ladds comes to the CJHL with a wealth of hockey experience and has been a fixture on the junior hockey landscape for many years.   He served as president of the Ontario Hockey Association (OHA) for 35 years, from 1977 to 2012, and has a deep understanding of hockey at the Junior A level and its events.   He served as Director of Operations for teams in the Canada Games, winning gold and silver in successive events, and was Director of Operations for Team Canada East in the first three World Junior A Challenges, where the teams he led captured two silvers and a bronze medal.   The native of Noranda, Quebec, who now resides in Calgary, Alberta, has also acted as Chair of Hockey Canada Junior Council for the past two years and chair of the RBC Cup in Lloydminster this past spring.   Along with many other recognitions, Ladds was awarded the Gold Stick for outstanding service to the OHA in 1992, the Hockey Canada Order of Merit in 1997 for contributions to the game nationally, and the Ontario Hockey Federation's President's Award in 2012 for outstanding contribution to hockey in Ontario.     "The CJHL has made such tremendous strides in recent years elevating their program both domestically and internationally, to the benefit of their players and fans," said Ladds.  "I am extremely optimistic about what lies ahead working with our partners, on the corporate side and through Hockey Canada with our national and international partners. I am very excited for the opportunity."   Rick Morocco, CJHL Executive Director since 2014, has departed the organization to pursue another opportunity.  "We wish Rick and his family all the best in his future endeavours and thank him for his two-and-a-half years of service to the league," said Lamb.

CJHL Top 20 Weekly Rankings

CALGARY, Alberta (September 26, 2016) – *A new season is now underway across all ten leagues in the CJHL, and already there are eleven teams who remain unbeaten after their first few weeks of regular season play. The British Columbia Hockey League just completed its annual Showcase this past week in Chilliwack and all teams played two games in front of several hundred pro scout and college coaches and recruiters, and the Wenatchee Wild have gotten off to a fast start. In Alberta, the AJHL is now rolling and the Fort McMurray Oil Barons have bolted to the top of the North Division, which is a wonderful story for a community that was ravaged by fire in the spring. The Spruce Grove Saints are right with Fort McMurray, and the Bonnyville Pontiacs, who will be hosting the 2016 World Junior ‘A’ Challenge, are right behind these two teams. In Saskatchewan, the Flin Flon Bombers have continued their fine play from last season, and along with the Humboldt Broncos, are the early leaders as the SJHL Showcase gets underway. Five teams remain unbeaten in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League, and include the Portage Terriers, the Steinbach Pistons, the OCN Blizzard, the Winkler Flyers, and the Swan Valley Stampeders – who have only played one game so far. Meanwhile, the Dryden Ice Dogs and the Thunder Bay North Stars remain unbeaten early in the Superior International Junior Hockey League campaign. Over in the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League, the Soo Thunderbirds and the Cochrane Crunch are deadlocked at the top of the standings. The OJHL Governors Showcase begins this week in Buffalo, NY, and the early leaders in the OJHL include the Trenton Golden Hawks, and Wellington Dukes. League Preview

Game on! Yes, the MJHL regular season kicks off Friday. After weeks of training camp/practices and pre-season games, it’s now down to real business for the players, hockey staffs and of course the fans. Below is snap-shot look at how the teams shape up this coming season. See you at the rink!

New season promises to be exciting for fans

By Derek Holtom MJHL Web Correspondent On the eve of the 2016-17 Manitoba Junior Hockey League season, Commissioner Kim Davis offered his comments on the new playoff format, former coaches, and the health of the league. The MJHL enters this season with another new playoff format, though it’s not exactly a radical change. The league has done away with the ‘Survivor Series’ format, meaning the top eight teams will qualify for the playoffs and that’s it. If you finish ninth, 10th, or 11th, your season ends in late February. “For five years we’ve had a ‘Survivor Series’, and the purpose of that was to allow teams that were close to the playoffs to get an extra game or two of action, and more importantly, to keep their local fan base interested later in the season when they might have been out of the playoffs under the older format. “It didn’t turn out to be as successful as we had hoped, so we reverted to the format for this year with the top eight teams going into a best-of-seven series.” The Winnipeg Blues made history as the only ‘Survivor Series” team that actually won the entire league, but that was when there were two divisions. Under the current format with only one division, the ninth and 10th place teams appear to have little chance at making any noise in the playoffs, never mind winning it all. Davis also noted with one division and a balanced schedule, this format will allow the top eight teams to get in, no matter where they are in the province. In years past the former Sher-Wood and Addison Divisions took turns being stronger than the other and often a fifth place team from one of those divisions would have been good enough to be a playoff team in the other division. Davis also commented on how the MJHL is not only a proving ground for players who want to play at higher levels, but for coaches as well. Former MJHL coaches David Anning and Don MacGillivray are now coaches with the Brandon Wheat Kings after honing their skills in the MJHL. “We’re very proud of the accomplishments of our players, coaches and teams,” said Davis. “It’s a big part of our league for coaches to get these opportunities. When they’re working on a day-to-day basis they’re getting better and honing their craft. “David and Don in particular have been doing this for a long time, so good on them, and on the Brandon Wheat Kings for having the confidence to give them those roles.” The health of the league is always a concern for the commissioner of the MJHL, and Davis said he continues to work with governors from the 11 teams to ensure all are as successful as possible. “There are some issues with a few teams in their ability to generate enough revenue to support the expenses that it takes to operate a club,” said Davis. “The board met last weekend, and we continue to meet to monitor and share information from a financial perspective. We have some teams that are doing very well, and some who face challenges.” Davis also noted the fan base is changing in some areas of the province, with less young people in some communities, meaning they have to be adaptable in their business plans. “We continue to find ways to raise money for teams, and the league has done a good job raising corporate money, and the teams share in that, so they’re getting great benefits from the efforts of Trevor Kennard (Director of Partnership Services).”

Neepawa Natives Unveil New Road Jerseys

The Neepawa Natives will be sporting a slightly different look on the ice this year, as the junior ‘A’ club has introduced a new road sweater for the 2016-2017 Manitoba Junior Hockey League (MJHL) season. The jersey is similar to the throwback worn by the Chicago Blackhawks during the 2009 NHL Winter Classic. It features a block N on the chest with the name Natives written in cursive over it. A secondary roundel mark with a block N, the full team name and the year the club joined the Manitoba Junior Hockey League is featured on the shoulders. Neepawa Natives board president Ken Waddell said the familiar indian head, which has been in use by the junior ‘A’ club since 1989, will remains the team’s primary logo. He noted however, that this new look is an effort to expand the team’s branding. The sweater has been generously sponsored by the Beautiful Plains Community Foundation (BPCF). Foundation president Jane Goudie said that Beautiful Plains is happy to team up with the Neepawa Natives to promote the foundation in a new way. "As our grant requests grow, the Foundation is seeking new ways of raising awareness about the positive impact the organization has had over the last 20 plus years,” said Goudie. “We want to keep the BPCF name front and centre as community members plan their yearly charitable donations.” Waddell added that the Neepawa Natives are very pleased to be able to partner with The Beautiful Plains Community Foundation to help market the foundation across Manitoba. “Wherever the team goes, the BPCF will be featured on our jerseys and in photos. The Neepawa Natives are good ambassadors for Neepawa and area. This partnership enhances that effort,” noted Waddell. “The traditional logo will still being used at home and the new one is matched up with the BPCF logo away from home. The BPCF support is greatly appreciated. The Natives board believes it is a great partnership.” The Neepawa Natives junior ‘A’ hockey club was established in 1989 and has been community owned since 2007. It has a proud history of developing players for all levels of hockey, including the NCAA, Major Junior, CIS and professional ranks. The Beautiful Plains Community Foundation was created in 1995 and through the interest on its endowment fund, provides grants to not-for-profit organizations in the Town of Neepawa, RM of Rosedale, RM of Glenella-Lansdowne and the Langford portion of the RM of North Cypress- Langford. Last year, the BPCF received $181,977 in Community Fund grant requests, but had only $38,700 available to distribute. Over the past 20 plus year, the Foundation has provided a total of $1,724,871 in Designated, Community and Youth Advisory Grants. Training camps fully underway: regular season fast approaching

Training camp is an extremely busy time for MJHL teams. Coaches and their support staff are evaluating players, with an eye to both the present and future. OCN Blizzard Head Coach/GM Doug Hedley is happy to be back at the rink, preparing his club for the upcoming season. “It’s been good so far,” said Hedley, who makes his return to OCN, previously serving as head coach in 2009. “We had a bit of a late start, but we’re right into it now. We had three teams at our rookie camp; then brought 22 players from that camp to our main camp. “We have four teams at our main camp. We’re definitely keeping everyone busy. We had a good opportunity to see and evaluate our list players; watch some of our northern list players. It’s definitely a busy time.” A long-time junior hockey coach, Hedley knows the importance of running a smooth-operating training camp, and the importance of evaluating players. Players are closely watched during inter-squad games, practices and pre-season games. Since being named GM/Head Coach, Hedley went about building an experienced, seasoned hockey staff. Long-time assistant coach Greg Hunter has returned to the bench, while former Blizzard player Tyler Grove was hired as a strength and conditioning coach. “You build in drills to evaluate players, how they do in battle drills, their respective skill level, their compete level,” he said. “Skating is obviously something we watch closely. Junior A hockey is very fast, and skating ability is a must.” Hedley, a former MJHL coach of the year, promises his squad will be ready for action when the regular season opens Friday, Sept. 23. Hedley, a native of Fort Qu’Appelle, Saskatchewan, has 20 years of coaching experience between Midget AAA and Jr A Hockey. Most recently, he spent last season as Head Coach of the Parkland AAA Rangers leading them to a 19-21 record. “I’m happy to be back in the MJHL and OCN Blizzard,” he said. “We have some good-looking prospects and of course some good veterans returning.”

Blues’ Lewis commits to Norwich University

Taeron Lewis has committed to Norwich University in Northfield, Vermont. He will be taking Business while playing for the Norwich Cadets. The Cadets have been to the frozen 4 eight out of the last ten years. Last seasons Captain, Taeron Lewis did everything and did it well. He was like the really big Swiss Army knife, he could hit, shoot, fight, score, kill penalties, play power plays and get the job done over all 200 feet of ice. Never afraid of "getting his sniffer dirty" you would always find Taeron battling tooth and nail with some of the biggest and meanest defencemen in front of the net, usually winning the battle and always undeterred. A natural leader, Taeron wore the "C" this season along with splitting time the previous season with Brett Brooks. He finished up his MJHL career with 48 goals, 73 assists for 131 points over 171 games. In his final season he ended up 7th in league scoring with 68 points – an average of 1.2 points per game. Pretty impressive considering he was being tasked with shutting down other teams top players and kill penalties on a nightly basis. On behalf of the Winnipeg Blues Jr. A, team-mates and fans we wish you all the best in the future in both hockey and life. We know your work ethic and determination will do you well.  Congratulations Taeron!!!

Terrier Head Coach Ready for 3 More Seasons

The Portage Terriers have re-signed the winningest coach in Terriers' history for another three years and are ready to defend their championship. Blake Spiller took the reigns from Don MacGillivray as head coach and GM of the Portage Terriers in 2006, and has been compiling an impressive resume ever since. He says he was a little overwhelmed at the start, but as time went along, the new staff really developed. "Each guy has his own responsibility that they take pride in doing the right way, and I think we have grown as a group as it's gone along." Spiller currently holds every Terriers' coaching record by a landslide, including regular season games coached (612), regular season wins (412), playoff games coached (163), and playoff wins (106). He has won the most MJHL championships (6), and RBC Cup championships (1). He has also won an Anavet Cup. Terriers' President Trent Ward knew it was an easy decision to re-sign the back to back MJHL and CJHL coach of the year to an extension. "There's really nothing to say! He's back-to-back Coach of the Year and he's a tremendous person in our organization. He's the backbone of the success of our hockey club and to have him return for the next 3 years as a coach is phenomenal for us. He runs one of the top programs here in Canada, and he's starting to get recognized with the awards for that. He's 100% committed to this hockey organization and continues its success." Blake Spiller says it's the coaching staff and organization that keeps him coming back. "Everything seems to flow along here pretty good. I'm excited for the start of the season as I always am." Coming into a new three year contract Spiller says he is still motivated to keep coaching. "You get a different group every year… you have to recruit. You have to try and get guys to play the way you want them to play. We take pride in doing our best to try to get to the top of the league. That's the driving force for all of us, we want to make sure that the players have a good environment to play in." The Portage Terriers will now get ready for training camp which will start September 2nd.

These scholarships will assist our graduating players to pursue their academic goals. We wish them the best of luck in their futures.” Earlier this year, a pair of other scholarships were awarded to MJHL players: Daniel Taillefer (Steinbach Pistons) won the IBAM Scholarship ($2,000), while Nathan Karlowsky (Winkler Flyers) won the RBC Junior A Scholarship of $1,000.

David Anning, a former captain and head coach of the Winnipeg Saints is now the head coach of Brandon Wheat Kings. He'll be joined by another MJHL alumni, Don MacGillivray who is leaving the Winnipeg Blues to be an assistant coach with the Kings. This is Mac's second stint in the WHL, once being an assistant coach/head coach with Prince Albert Raiders. Anning replaces long-time Wheat King head coach Kelly McCrimmon, who was recently named assistant GM with the new Las Vegas NHL franchise. McCrimmon is also owner of the Wheat Kings. Anning, a defenceman, played four seasons with the Saints, eventually moving on to be an assistant coach with Dauphin Kings.‎ "This is a tremendous accomplishment for both David and Don," MJHL Comissioner Kim Davis said. Blizzard’s Harland Commits to University of Regina

The OCN Blizzard are extremely proud to announce another commitment this week. Leading scorer and captain Logan Harland has committed to the University of Regina Cougars for the 2016-17 season. Harland had an outstanding year leading the OCN Blizzard in scoring 39 goals and 56 assists for 95 points in 60 regular season games. Harland came to OCN last season after spending parts of 3 seasons in the CHL and immediately stepped into a leadership role with the young Blizzard team. “Coming into last year I was excited to play on a team with such young skilled hockey players, we were a group of guys that gelled right from the start and they accepted me as leader and taught me just as much as I could teach them” Harland said. “Playing in OCN was amazing, it was a great atmosphere and right down from the core of the team, coaches, staff and community everyone loves hockey. The culture is great, you learn a lot and meet great people.” Harland leaves OCN as the MJHL MVP runner up and a first team all-star. His 95 points with the Blizzard are the 11th most for a Blizzard player in a single MJHL season. He will join the Regina Cougars team and take on the task of balancing hockey and school for the first time. “I’m looking to fill a role in Regina like I did in OCN, as a player that produces and is dependable ” Harland said.  “The balance between hockey and school is a challenge I’m looking forward to facing. Committing to things outside of hockey tends to balance everything out and carry over to the ice. It’s going to be a full schedule and a good chance to see if I can handle it.” Moving to OCN and the Town of The Pas can be challenging place to play, as the northern most MJHL community it can be tough to adjust to the surroundings. It was something Harland handled well and playing for the Blizzard was the challenge that changed Harland’s life. “It keeps you focused on hockey and inspired to play the game that young Canadians dream of playing for the rest of their lives. Living in The Pas was great and my billet Randi Salamanowicz was amazing, it felt like home and was a great place to live and play hockey.” Harland said. “I can’t thank Head Coach Jason Smith and Director of Player Personal Wayne Yaremko for everything they’ve done for me. They are the reason I’m still playing the game of hockey and love what I do.” Harland will join the University of Regina Cougars next season and will attend their camp this fall. The OCN Blizzard would like to wish “Harly” the best of luck in the future. The OCN Blizzard begin the 2016-17 season with rookie camp on Aug 31st and will play their first exhibition game against the Flin Flon Bombers on Sept 6th.

Hopefully we can be part of a third straight league title.” The Terriers Organization would like to wish Nathan the best of luck in the next step of his hockey career.

MJHL Alumni Finding Opportunity at Nipissing

Located 1,650 kilometres southeast from the Manitoba/Ontario border, is the city of North Bay, Ontario which bolsters a population of just over 50,000 people. The city overlooks Lake Nipissing, which is also the name of the local university. Nipissing University was rated 3rd in the nation for student satisfaction in 2016 by Maclean’s Magazine and is the home of head coach Mike McParland’s Lakers Men’s varsity hockey team who compete in the OUA. A team that is more than satisfied with the influx of Manitoba talent they have seen come through their program since their inaugural season in 2009. Mike McParland grew up in northwestern Ontario and played for the North Bay Trappers and Sudbury Wolves of the OHA with the likes of Ron Duguay and Mike Foligno before going overseas. He returned to Canada in 2008 after 26 years in Switzerland where he played and coached in their National Leagues. Upon his return, he took the head coaching job with the Lakers and hasn’t looked back, building a program from the ground up. A program that in his mind, wouldn’t be where it is without the MJHL alumni that he has been able to recruit. “We have been really lucky with the guys we have brought in from Manitoba”, explains McParland, “Whether it be Danny Watt, Jason Gray, Jonny Mitchell or Brendan Mitchell, they have all contributed”. Since McParland took over in 2009, there have been 10 players graduate from the MJHL and move onto playing for Nipissing, including three team captains in Jason Gray (Winnipeg South Blues), Brendan Mitchell (Selkirk Steelers) and Patrice Wren (Winkler Flyers). Those 10 players have logged a total of 379 regular season games collectively. “Between Carson Shields (Recruitment Men’s Hockey) and my visits to Manitoba, we have been able to get some quality players”, says Mike, “We don’t always have the most to offer in terms of money but our school and reputation speaks for itself”. One of those players, Jason Gray, who just came off a breakthrough season with the Dundee Stars of the EIHL- agrees with McParland. “Nipissing gave me the opportunity to play in the CIS and by my last season I was the captain”, explains Gray, “It set me up for life after school, on the ice and off.” Gray plans to return to the UK next year and obtain his MBA. The term “Success Breeds Success” could be applied when speaking about the program at Nipissing. The team has never won a championship but is in the mix every single year and there are many players eager to follow in the footsteps of Gray. Coach McParland would rather measure the success of the program by the character of the graduates rather than the year to year record. One of those players is Brendan Mitchell, a two time Academic All-Canadian and assistant captain with the Lakers who is entering into his final season with the club. “I’ll graduate this year with a BBA (Hons.) and I’m looking to continue my hockey career at a higher level”, says Mitchell, “Carson scouted me, Mike gave me an opportunity to play and the small class sizes helped me to succeed off the ice”. Looking to next year, McParland is eager to make a splash in the OUA and thrust deeper into the playoffs.  He knows that will require fresh talent to push veterans and build that internal competition. Does that mean more MJHL alumni? “We have talked to a few players from the MJHL this year and we hope we can land some of them . . . the league prepares guys to make the jump but how soon they adjust is up to them”, adds McParland. Below is a list of MJHL Alumni who have played at Nipissing: Maxime Provencher- Swan Valley Cole Holowenko- Swan Valley Jaret Smith- Neepawa Dan Watt- Winnipeg Saints Jason Gray- Winnipeg Blues Patrice Wren- Winkler Flyers Brendan Mitchell- Selkirk Tyler Riel- Winnipeg Blues Guillaume Naud- Dauphin Mitchell Deacon- Swan Valley

Terriers’ Stewart Coyote howlin’ happy

Dean Stewart has always had a soft spot in his heart for the Arizona Coyotes. Back when Stewart was 10 years old, he went to a Coyotes’ practice, meeting with Shane Doan. They even had their picture taken. Selected by the Coyotes in the recent NHL draft, the outstanding Portage Terrier defenceman may one day be making passes to his ‘ol buddy Mr. Doan. Stewart, 18, was selected in the 7th round, 188th overall in the 2016 NHL Draft by the Arizona Coyotes. "My family went on a little vacation to Phoenix when I was in grade 4 or 5, and we were able to go and watch a couple of Coyotes practices and we got to go into the dressing room,” recalls Stewart. “Shane Doan and a few of the other players took me around and showed me the facilities and things like that, so there are a lot of great guys in that organization. It was a pretty cool experience." Stewart played 42 games for the Terriers last season, scoring eight goals and 14 assists for 22 regular season points. Terriers’ capped their incredible season, winning yet another Turnbull Trophy. The club made a good run at the Western Canada Cup, but fell a bit short in going to the RBC Cup. "It's pretty surreal and it definitely still hasn't sunk in,” Stewart says of the draft. “I mean, it's pretty much every hockey players dream to get drafted to the NHL and the fact that it happened is really cool. It's pretty amazing and I don't know how to describe the feeling right now, but it's probably the best day of my life." Stewart says he was watching the draft, when he got a phone call. "I was watching the draft on my computer and about three picks before 188, Arizona actually called me and told me they were going to take me with their next pick, so that's how I found out. It was pretty cool, and it was a pretty exciting phone call for me, that's for sure." Note:  The Arizona Coyotes’ published an excellent article about  Dean. We thought we would share it with you. Terriers’ Stewart selected in NHL draft

BUFFALO, NY – Portage Terriers' outstanding defenceman Dean Stewart was selected in the 7th round (188th overall) of the NHL Draft by the Arizona Coyotes Saturday.  Stewart, 18, hails from Portage and picked up eight goals and 14 assists last season for 22 points with the Terriers. He also helped Team Canada West capture gold at the World Junior 'A' Challenge this past season. "Congratulations to Dean and the Portage Terrier organization," MJHL Commissioner Kim Davis said today. "This reflects the exceptional talent level in our league. Dean's hockey career is now going up to the next step." Stewart joins former MJHLers Peter Stoykewych and Brendan O’Donnell as players selected into the NHL Draft. O'Donnell, who is a former Winnipeg South Blue, was grabbed 156th overall (6th round) by the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2010. Stoykewych, also a former Winnipeg South Blue, was taken 199th overall (7th round) by the Atlanta Thrashers in 2010.
